US research and development of new handheld biometrics

Korean researchers have developed successful high-performance thermal sensing sensors based on insulator-changing conductor technology. This sensor can improve the thermal sensing performance of existing sensors of the same type by 100 times, and can effectively prevent the battery from exploding due to overheating.

The research team led by Dr. Jin Xianzhuo of the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute passed the insulator conduction test last September and confirmed for the first time that the insulator proposed by the scientist more than 50 years ago can conduct electricity. It is the first in the world to invent the technology that makes the insulator conductive. With this technique, the insulator can become a conductor at a particular temperature.

Jin Xianzhuo and others have further developed high-performance thermal sensing sensors. This type of sensor can be used in batteries for household appliances and the like, and can prevent them from exploding when overheated. Experiments have shown that the secondary lithium battery for mobile phones has an explosion temperature of 177 degrees Celsius, while secondary lithium batteries with high performance thermal sensing sensors do not explode at 210 degrees Celsius. In addition, with the high-performance thermal sensing sensor, the secondary lithium battery can avoid significant expansion due to overheating.

High-performance thermal sensing sensors are approximately 100 times more thermally sensitive than existing sensors. If the existing thermal sensing sensor of the same kind can sense the heat at a distance of 1 meter, the high-performance thermal sensing sensor can sense the heat at a distance of 100 meters. In view of this feature, high-performance thermal sensing sensors can be widely used in food fermentation, fire alarm and other fields, and are expected to be used as thermal sensing instruments in military and aerospace fields.
