Teijin will mass-produce carbon fiber for automobiles

The company will invest approximately 30 billion yen in the United States and plans to increase production capacity by 40% by 2015. US General Motors (GM) plans to use carbon fiber in its mass-market models.
GM and Teijin reached a cooperation intention last year, and strive to establish production technology. This time, General Motors' use of carbon fiber is a major model for general customers that will be available after 2015. In areas where a large-strength skeleton is required and part of the structure is called "structural material," carbon steel is used instead of steel. Teijin will launch test equipment to mass-produce structural materials combining carbon fiber and resin at this month's factory in Matsuyama. General Motors will use this component to start the actual vehicle test. Some people think that Teijin already has the technology to make carbon fiber parts within one minute, and its production speed will be reduced to about one-tenth of the previous one.
In terms of capacity increase, the company will expand its factory in Tennessee, USA, or establish a new factory in other locations in the United States. The company also has carbon fiber factories in Japan and Germany. Its production capacity is currently 13,900 tons (20% of the global share), second only to Dongli (18,000 tons per year), ranking second in the world.
