2010 November Diesel Engine Sales: The Greatest Growth in the Great Wall

According to the data compiled by Gasgoo.com, the Chinese diesel engine sales volume from January to November 2010 was 3,630,400 units, an increase of 30.20% over the same period last year. The increase was better than the same period of last year (only a 24.19% increase over the same period of last year), and it was close to Gasoline engine growth. From January to November, the gasoline engine increased by 30.75% year-on-year to 11.7151 million units. The main reason for the higher growth in diesel engine sales was the increase in sales of heavy-duty trucks and SUVs using diesel engines. In particular, sales of heavy trucks increased by 64.45% in January-November this year, causing orders for many diesel engines to increase significantly.

Top 4 sales in January-November sales exceeded 390,000 units

From January to November this year, the top 20 diesel engine manufacturers were: Yuchai, FAW, Quanchai, Weichai, Yunnei, Dongfeng Limited, Dongfeng Chaochai, Jiangling, CNHTC, Laidong, Weichai Power. Chai, Great Wall, Beiqi Futian, Qingling, Jianghuai, Nanjing Automobile, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle, Shangchai, Shanghai Hino and Mianyang Xinhua. Compared with the same period of last year, FAW-Volkswagen fell out of the top 20, and in 2008 sales of the 20th company Mianyang Xinhua returned to 20th from January to November this year.

The sales of the first 11 units each exceeded 100,000 units in January-November this year. The first seven companies all exceeded 200,000 units, and the first four companies all exceeded 390,000 units. Yuchai's sales have exceeded 690,000 units.

The market share of the top 7 diesel engine companies decreased

From January to November this year, the share of 20 companies in the Chinese automotive diesel engine market was 99.07%, which was basically the same as the top 20 share (99.10%) in the same period of last year. The top 7 companies accounted for 72.33% of the total, down 3.35% from the same period last year. The share of the top four companies also fell by 2.20% to 54.68%.

Great Wall Diesel Engine has the fastest growth

Among the top 20 diesel engine companies, sales growth of 12 companies exceeded the average of the diesel engine market. Among them, 4 companies (Great Wall, Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, JAC, and Shanghai Hino) exceeded 100%, and 7 of them (the aforementioned 4 companies and Dongfeng Motor, Laidong, Weichai) exceeded 75%.

The Great Wall has the highest growth rate. From January to November this year, diesel engine sales increased 120.75% year-on-year to 78,000 units, and thus promoted to the 12th place in this market. Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd. recorded the second largest growth rate of commercial vehicle companies - a year-on-year increase of 108.29% to 29,100 units. The ranking also rose by 2 to 17th.

Among the top 7 diesel engine sales companies, the highest growth rate was Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., which was a year-on-year increase of 82.17% to 211.7 million units. Among the top four companies, the fastest growing rate was Weichai – a year-on-year increase of 75.20% to 394,700 units.

Behind the high sales growth of these diesel engine companies is the high growth of the market represented by heavy trucks and SUVs.

Yunnei Power and FAW Volkswagen declined

In contrast to the above-mentioned enterprises, the sales of diesel engines of Yunnei Power and FAW-Volkswagen all declined year-on-year. Yunnei Power dropped 10.16% year-on-year to 21.99 million vehicles. FAW-Volkswagen diesel engine sales decreased by 29.08% year-on-year to 1.08 million units.

FAW-Volkswagen's diesel production fell more sharply in January-November this year - down 39.92% year-on-year to 9,975 vehicles. In the same period of last year, the production and sales volume of FAW-VW's diesel engines increased by 25.55% and 19.22%, respectively.

As the only diesel engine production base in China, FAW-Volkswagen's decline in diesel production highlights the decline in VW's domestic diesel vehicle production, and Volkswagen's possible adjustment of its diesel engine program in China.
