Hyperelastic bone is printed out in 3D

New research shows: the so-called new synthetic material - hyper-elastic bone, or HB, may be "the next breakthrough" in the reconstruction surgery. The HB can be implanted under the skin with new bone under the stent, or used to completely replace the lost bone. Although it has not been tested in humans, early experiments in animals seem to be successful, with "pretty amazing" results.

Hyperelastic bone is flexible and can be easily shaped. In a study published today describing the science of translational medicine, most are made from naturally occurring minerals called hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite bone exploration and reconstruction surgery has used a form of calcium that is very brittle, but researchers have used polymers to mix it for added flexibility. They tested it from this new, promising material, then printed 3D bone grafts and various experiments.
This material was actually 3D printed and it was surprising to find that when squeezed or deformed, it bounced right back to the original shape. Hyperelastic bone is much more flexible than traditional materials. Super-elastic bone can be easily cut, rolled, folded, and pressed into the missing bone material without glue or suture areas. It is also highly porous and absorbs, which is the key to the bone graft material to encourage blood vessel growth into the surgical field.
