Because the equipment for manual cutting of the groove is simple (using common gas cutting equipment), it is convenient and flexible. For the combined parts and structures with more complex parts and single pieces of production, manual cutting is more convenient and effective. However, the quality of hand-cut grooves is largely influenced by the proficiency of cutting techniques. For the welding groove of important components or pressure vessels, it is better not to cut by hand without any certainty.
The common welding groove in welding structure is V-shaped, Y-shaped, X-shaped (with or without blunt edges), U-shaped, as shown in Figure 1. Where the V-shaped and Y-shaped grooves are generally not easy to cut when the angle of one side of the groove is more than 30°, the groove surface needs to be placed on the back surface for cutting.
